Claro-Walnut Sofa Table With Steel Legs

KH Webb Architects of Vail designed a remodeled ski home for a large family from Mexico. They needed two sofa tables of specific sizes and the Matriarch had seen a similar concept. With children running around, it needed to be sturdy and safe for little eye-balls at table height. The interior was decorated in a clean, contemporary style with other cabinetry was made from Black Walnut.

The longer table (shown here) would be the most visible piece of art as you enter the living room. The second table was tucked into a well-lit corner with a small sculpture on it and a gorgeous Hispanic painting over it.

The top is 1¾" thick Claro Walnut with a natural edge on the front and a straight back edge to nestle up against the rear of a sofa. The ½" steel plate legs were custom fabricated by Black Magic Welding, who did excellent joint work and a nice patina.

The legs pierce the top with a cross pattern, an appropriate theme for this family. The legs are mortised into the underside for stability and held in place with wedges on the long-grain to prevent splitting. Any sharp points or corners were heavily softened for the safety of little eyes.
