This collage is created from recycled materials, re-printed original drawings, misc. paper scraps, words and hammered copper on recycled wood. It measures 9 x 6 x 1.25".
The Bird Women series commemorates the work of archeologist, Marija Gimbutas, and her remarkable findings from the neolithic and paleolithic civilizations of Old Europe. The series is dedicated to Marija Gimbutas and Riane Eisler, two women who not so much inspired me as flung open a door.
The series includes mixed media collages using recycled materials and limited edition prints of collages and watercolor/ink paintings. Most of the collage pieces include words, poetry and other snippets to help explain who the bird goddesses were and what their importance is to us today.
I find it to be of immense importance to know that there have been peaceful, partnership-oriented, egalitarian societies in the distant past and to realize that there was a time when women and their special abilities were revered.
