"Colony Of One"

Bumble bee, oxidized silver, mica, fire opal, cast and oxidized bronze, resin

In an effort to preserve a unique characteristic of the bumblebee, the fuzz, the body of the bee has been hollowed out, filled with resin, and reassembled. The legs have been fabricated out of sterling silver, and the wings have been carved out of mica. The branch that it sits on is two twig specimens that I spliced together and cast directly into bronze. A fire opal has been set in the bud of the twig. "Colony of One" calls attention to the honeybees that are rapidly disappearing from Colony Collapse Disorder.
