The body of this art clock is painted driftwood gray with a charcoal and barn red face, and painted swirling designs in cream. The body was lightly sanded after each layer of paint and finished with a protective topcoat to create a smooth and lustrous finish. The clock measures 9 x 16" (inches).
Accents on the clock were achieved by shaping and hammering copper wire and the careful employment of a woodburning tool. The pendulum is an olive green circle with a bit of ink design decoupaged in the center and definite signs of pyrography as well. It swings a bit mysteriously behind three vertical circle cut-outs in the clock body and it blends well with the overall artistic design.
Cucuteni was the name given to the culture whose artifacts were found in this region of Romania. The word comes from the Romanian word for hemlock. I'm fascinated by the swirl motifs found painted on Cucuteni pottery dating from the Neolithic Period. The people of the Cucuteni region appear to have had an egalitarian society. Good stuff.
The piece of functional art is painted with old-fashioned milk paints which are durable and VOC free! Also, the wood-based material it is constructed of is a 100% recycled wood fiber, formaldehyde-free sustainable board. Yay! It's equipped with a quartz clockwork and runs on a single AA battery (included).
