This project was commissioned to honor the birthday of the client's wife who is from Wales. The Welsh flag, one of the most striking and complicated designs, was to be the center piece of the panel.
Dimensions: 16" x 12"
In order to achieve the detail of the dragon within a fairly limited space, I decided to create the design using a mosaic-like technique. I assembled the individual pieces of red glass in a somewhat irregular yet recognizable copy of the Welsh dragon using several hues of red glass. I then assembled the background colors of glass all on a clear piece of base glass. By damming the glass before firing, the glass pieces flowed into each other creating a fairly tight color array. I painted the detail onto the dragon using black glass enamel and fired the piece a second time. This created the center panel for the project.
I created the border design using traditional stained glass techniques. I based the design on one used for love spoons. Love spoons are an old Welsh tradition which were carved by the groom and given to the bride on their wedding day. I chose the interlocking hearts, a version of the eternal knot, as it seemed a fitting expression of the clients love for his wife. The red and green heart and border extended the colors of the Welsh flag.
I wanted the glass to express the energy and pride of the Welsh flag and I feel that the combination of various reds and the slightly irregular shapes combined with the precision of the black outline accomplished this goal. Being of Welsh descent myself, it was an honor to do this project. Cymru am byth!
