Every artist or craftsperson knows how important it is to convey your ideas to a potential client. We either do a quick sketch or submit a line drawing, then either rework the drawing. Often times, the drawing gradually develops into something spectacular. This combination of talking with a client, the craftsman drawing upon their woodworking skills, knowledge and artistic "style", creates a piece that the client will be happy to call their own.
The piece designed in this drawing is an interpretation of a spice chest with a table base. The design elements, which encompass both style and technical engineering can often be attributed to a particular maker.
The chest is designed for Jewelry. The vertical drawer were designed for hanging jewelry within the dovetailed drawer. What is unique about this idea is the drawer can be completely removed, simple in function with little upkeep and much less likely hood of the drawer ever having a design flaw. The drawers interior is setup with a series of hooks to hang jewelry, while, the whole interior is lined with velvet.
This chest is being built in Cherry, with a Natural finish. This chest can't really be called Shaker, there are so many items dubbed Shaker today, many of which bastardize the fine, simple and exquisite craftsmanship of the Shakers. I'm not really sure where the design came from, I just sat down and drew it after someone asked me for a jewelry chest with a table beneath.
