Doll Tower

This piece houses a collection of historical dolls for the same mother of the same girlfriend. She wanted French provincial. I had to look it up, draw, simplify, and pare down the excesses of the style. Pear wood was a natural, both for the pinkish color and also because she wanted carved roses for the detailing. Pear wood has a tight close grain that takes delicate carving beautifully. The glass panels are all beveled.

The top section presented a particular challenge. I was able to rough cut most of the moldings for the top using a pattern but the final shaping and sanding had to be done by hand. The top itself is made from coopered walnut. The overall height of this piece is just less than 8 feet.
