This box was designed to display a first edition of "Mary Poppins". I decided, a dovetailed box was appropriate for the special book. The dovetail pattern is integrated into the lid and into the body of the box.
The dovetails are sawn and hand cut with chisels and a back saw. The scribe line is a marker that allows me to cut the joints at the correct depth. It is marked with a tool called a marking gage.
The tools are fairly simple, but the joinery has to be precise, so the joints fit together exact.
I used solid Cherry for this project. I suggested a stained Cherry, which complement the color of the book. I used a 95 degree stop hinge so the box could be opened and the lid would rest open on its own. The lid has a glass top to see the box.
This project was fun and was built based on the line drawing. I upholstered a pad with black fabric and allowed space for a plaque, beneath the book.
The use is to display a book.
The style is simple Shaker style box. It is simple and elegant.
This project was fun and really enjoyed corresponding with Darin.

Michael did an amazing job on a box I had him make for a rare book for my wife. The quality was amazing and the communication was excellent. I even ended up making a change along the way and it didn't even seem to phase him...he was great to work with and willing to do whatever it took to make it right. It was delivered on time and looks amazing! Great Job Michael and thanks again!
