Elaine brought this tile to my studio one day. I made Elaine 16 knobs to match the tile in her new bathroom.
These knobs are made with a few different colors of glass and fine silver leaf, first I make a base knob with ivory color glass then I lay a layer of silver leaf on being careful not to burn silver( this is a challenge because the flame I use to melt the ivory color glass is 1600 degrees!) When this is done I judicially burn off some silver- this is what makes the special organic tones, each one a little different and then I encase in crystal clear glass. After this I melt a light tone of transparent green glass and apply around the perimeter of the glass knob.
I am extremely pleased with how these knobs look with the tile. I must get a picture of the finished bathroom! By the way I should mention...no glass knob ever leaves my studio until I am extremely pleased with the design and level of high quality craftsmanship I insist upon.
Like everything I make I follow a concise & technical schedule to cool glass (in a kiln) to insure a high quality object that will not break under normal circumstances.
The hardware and tools used to make these glass knobs were designed by me years ago. I wanted to make glass knobs for my kitchen and I could not find any hardware let alone tools to accomplish this. The same manufacturing plant in the mid west makes these widgets and tools for me today just as they did back in 1995. Today I sell the glass knobs and tool kits (for other glass artists to make knobs) throughout the world.
