The Ellipse II Table draws its design inspiration from the original Ellipse Dining Table design of 2002. The top edge detail has been refined with an undercut bevel profile, while the sculpted tapered cone base now features a small convex inlay of either Amboyna wood or stainless steel. The sunburst grain pattern on the top is optional. Custom sizes and extension leaves are available.
The Ellipse II Table is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for being made of wood that was harvested in a sustainable manner from well managed forests.
The FSC is an international not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1993 by environmental groups such as Greenpeace, The Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund. Its mandate is to protect the world's forests through globally recognized principles of responsible forest stewardship. FSC is the only certified wood accepted under the U.S. Green Building Council's stringent LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
The wood used on the table as shown in the photo is called Nero Chaquiro, and it comes from an FSC certified forest in Brazil. The use of this wood helps support the livelihood of an indigenous community living along the Amazon River by providing a tangible incentive to manage the forest sustainably as opposed to engaging in destructive practices such as clear-cutting and intensive farming.
The small convex inlay at the bottom of the tapered elliptical cone base carries a special provenance in the world of sustainable forest management. The wood used to make this inlay is called Amboyna, and it comes from the last remaining board known to exist of the very first wood to be sustainably harvested on the Solomon Islands in the early to mid-1990s. This wood made its way into North America by way of Eco-Timber in California.
Each table is crafted one at a time on a bench by hand, and is individually dated, numbered and signed.
