Figured Walnut Writing Slope With Brass And Mother Of Pearl Inlay
The Figured Walnut body is continuous grain that wraps around the whole writing slope in both the top and bottom. This writing slope has over 80 inlaid brass dots, over 15 feet of brass strip inlay and an inlaid Mother of Pearl rose that is comprised of 20 hand cut petals. The brass corners of the slope are hand made in the U.K. which had to also be inlaid to sit flush with the surface. The locking mechanism is also handmade in the U.K.. Once opened a leather writing surface is revealed that was hand tooled and gold tooled in the Netherlands. The writing surface is held in place with Mother of Pearl hold downs that are hand cut and shaped to resemble rose petals. By rotating the hold downs you can the fold back the writing surface to reveal two ink wells and a pen rest. The lighter interior of the writing slope is highly figured flame Maple. The pen rest pivots and can be removed to get to the secret trigger that opens up the the secret compartment. Once the false front is removed it reveals two hidden drawers that have brass inlaid dots and turned ebony pulls. Having not to much information on historical writing slopes, I was forced to figure dimensions off of many photos.
