This project creates a solution to the open spaces on either side of a protruding firebox ("before" photos); a common design found in modern day homes. The objective was to design a unit that would make the most use of the spaces; specifically create storage and open shelf space, garage the TV and provide a sense of balance to a non-symmetrical area ("after" photos).
After brainstorming with the homeowners and an Interior Designer, the following features satisfy the design: fully adjustable shelves; an articulating full extension arm (which passes through an opening in the unit back and mounts directly to the wall for stability), controls TV location; strategically placed grommets for cordage management and fully concealed door hardware (doors operate using "push to open / push to close" mechanisms), creating clean uninterrupted lines. The addition of a crown molding bonds these new built-ins with the existing house design to create a main focal point in the room.
The material used was maple and maple ply. The homeowner chose the color to compliment the existing oak mantel.
