Freeform Ethiopian Opal Pendant

This pendant was created based on a rough sketch that was provided by the customer. They also provided me with their coveted opal, a whooper in size that had been freeform cut to maximize its size. They also provided me with all the CZ stones that I would need for this project as well as the 4 small tear drop Australian opals.

This design was then part cast and part hand fabricated. The main body of the pendant, plus the bail were cast via lost wax casting. I then added all 6 prongs and an open back system to hold the opal in place while keeping the amount of stone coverage to a minimum. Each prong had to be soldered in by hand with a torch.

After the pendant was done, I hand set each CZ flush with the surface and then bezel set the four tear drop opals. Lastly the large opal was set by carefully bending each of the 6 prongs over the edge to hold it securely.

The result is one of a kind for sure! The customer was also local and was so pleased with the pictures, that he came over that night to pick it up so that they could wear it to their farmers market the next day. He is also a jewelry maker himself who specializes in glass-work.

The price range is for sterling silver and assumes that the customer provides all loose stones.
