This "Freestanding Cabinet" can preserve your most treasured possession, display a family heirloom, or perhaps take on a more utilitarian function and serve as the "top shelf" liquor cabinet with room in the drawers for a corkscrew and opener. Either way it is sure to impress.
The cabinet is constructed from one gorgeous solid slab of highly figured guitar-grade Quilted Maple. Both the door panels and sides are bookmatched to form a spectacular and unique mirror-image pattern.
The hardware on the doors consists of high quality solid brass knife hinges and brass spring-loaded ball catches. The doors open and close with a tiny satisfying "click."
The base and legs are made from spectacular native Californian Claro Walnut. The joinery on the base is "through mortise and tenon", wedged with contrasting maple "micro" wedges. The legs flair out in all four directions diagonally with hand-shaped tapered compound curves, and end in Curly Maple feet.
The interior shows the solid Wormy Maple back panel, and a Wormy Maple drawer box. If you look carefully you will see that the pattern on the box as well as the drawer sides are book-matched as well. The drawer fronts are quarter-sawn, Curly Claro Walnut.
To finish the cabinet I hand rubbed 6 coats of a tung oil and varnish mix, and then hand polished it with three coats of wax inside and out.
Every aspect of this cabinet was hand crafted with meticulous attention to detail. I know you will enjoy owning it as much as I enjoyed building it!
Dimensions: The cabinet is 27" wide, 17" tall and 12" deep, and it stands 58" tall overall.
