Entryway Light Fixture - Kailua Crotons

This commission was for a series of 28 fused glass panels that were installed into two custom built wooden light boxes inspired by the Arts and Crafts era chandeliers of Greene and Greene. Each was lit with a series of LED flat panels.

The landscape in front of the house features the brilliant red, green, amber and orange hues of crotons. These were the inspiration for the design which wraps around and under each of the two lights. The two chandeliers create a vibrant splash of color as one approaches the front entryway.

The panels combine areas of raked glass with areas of single color glass. To create the raked glass, I heat an arrangement of glass to 1700 degrees in the kiln, open the lid and rake across the surface of the glass to create swirls and eddies of color. Once the panels were full fused, I kiln carved shapes based upon the croton leaves in the back of each one for an added textural element.
