The Gentleman's Semainaire is a Chest designed as a valet, for organizing and storing the various necessities of today's man.
The exterior is crafted from a rare sampling of Curly Birds Eye maple veneer, while the interior is made from quarter cut Makore. The interwoven inlay on the top and all 4 sides is made of a combination of Maple, Mahogany and Ebony woods.
This cabinet is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as being made primarily from wood that was harvested in a sustainable manner from a well-managed forest.
The 2 halves of the exterior shell pivot open to reveal an interior cabinet that holds 7 drawers designed to store shirts, socks, briefs and ties. In the upper drawer there are special trays with leather bottoms intended to hold cuff links, fountain pens, wrist watches and even loose change. The 2 doors below the drawers provide additional space for storage.
Inlaid into the top of this cabinet is a raised inlay design of a turtle, which was inspired by an aboriginal rock glyph. This image is symbolic for several reasons. Turtles are deeply revered in many ancient cultures and civilizations because they are one of the oldest forms of life and the shell is symbolic of protection. A turtle also does not move very fast, which is indicative of the need for patience.
The primary wood used to make this inlay is Narra, and it carries a special provenance in the world of sustainable forest management because it comes from the last remaining board known to exist of the very first wood to be sustainably harvested on the Solomon Islands in the early to mid-1990s. This wood made its way into North America by way of Eco-Timber in California.
