George Nakashima Style - Mid Century Modern Bench
Clearly inspired by George Nakashima.II created this bench with a live edge seat area and a seat back of hand turned, hickory wood spindles. The butterfly joints stabilize most of the natural defects - cracks, knot holes, etc. - in the wood. I filled some of the defects with clear fiberglass resin so that the seat would be smooth and comfortable.
Building this bench was such a satisfying project and I truly enjoyed all of the many many many hours I spent working on it. The bench is incredibly smooth! I sanded it for an entire day, using up to 600 grit sandpaper. The finish is a hand rubbed tung oil and linseed oil mixture, top-coated with wipe on polyurethane for extra durability. Completion time, choice of lumber, vary. Please contact me to discuss.
