What a wonderful artist Michelle is! After meeting with us initially to better understand what we had in mind for the transom window, she prepared several artist drawings with suggested themes. Every one was a possibility that we could have been pleased with. With her talent it made it difficult to decide. We settled on one, then changed to another, and finally after incorporating elements from more than one, and with further changes and additions we finally settled on what has become a work of art in the 6' wide arched transom window above our 8' front doors. It incorporates elements of the family's heritage with a truly wonderful rondel at it's center.
I built this chess board using glass mosaic on a wood base and framed in wood. I designed it to accompany a set of chess pieces that represented the ancient struggle between the roman legions and the barbarian tribes. The double circle of red and gold around the check pattern represents the Roman chess pieces. The green triskell, ancient symbol of the Celts, In each of the corners represents the tribal chess pieces. The glass I chose for this project has a rough, almost stone like quality which gave the piece a more rustic feel.
The board measures approximately 26" x 26" with 1 3/4" squares. It is framed in wood.
