Hand Carved Sassafras Table Lamp

I wanted to make a hand carved table lamp carved utilizing the helix. It gives an appearance of motion at rest, and both reflects light and casts shadow in an interesting way. I chose sassafras wood because it is fairly easy to carve, has a distinctive grain pattern, and has a wonderful light tan color. Once I sanded the wood to a smooth finish, I stained it to bring out the intense grain pattern. The sassafras is finished in three coats of lacquer. I made the base in hard maple and finished it in durable matt automotive finish to contrast with the sassafras. The handmade shade is covered in black fabric to match the base. The interior of the shade is lined with white to reflect light onto the sassafras to show its color.
