This piece was created for an avid cigar lover and AJ Fernandez Man of War cigar brand fan. What a conversation piece!
This piece is created using the traditional stained glass techniques that have not changed since the 12th century. It is 100% custom hand-painted. The paint is made out of ground up particles of glass, which is then mixed with a medium and applied on glass. However, there is no paint in existence that would stick to glass permanently, unless it is fired in a special kiln to temp up to 1250 F. When the pieces undergo the long and complex process of firing, the paint becomes permanent part of glass and will NEVER come off. The firing technique involves heating the glass slowly and evenly and cooling it down carefully as well to avoid heat shocking the glass, which causes breakage. Each color of paint generally has to be applied and fired separately. The beautiful gold color is achieved by application of silver stain pigment, a silver compound which reacts with the glass at high temp in the kiln, turning it various shades of yellow depending on thickness of application, temp and hold times.
The general guideline is any painted job is approximately $400-500/sq foot.
