Hand Turned Douglas Fir Table Lamp

I am always experimenting with various types of woods and finishes to see what results I can get. I made this lamp out of hand turned Douglas Fir. I selected fir because it has an interesting grain pattern when dyed black. I used wood dye instead of stain because dye penetrates deeply into the pores of the wood and produces a unique finish, one that stain cannot achieve. Once the dye dried I sealed it with sanding sealer. The result was that the softer areas of the wood developed a darker matte finish and the harder portions of the grain became a lighter semi gloss. This allows the grain to show in a subtle way without over-powering the basic form of the fixture. The lamp comes with a black lamp cord and a 60w light bulb. The included black matte shade is handcrafted in the USA.
