This one of a kind hedgehog sculpture was made completely by hand using my brown stoneware clay body. Each hand rolled coil was methodically applied to the hollow sculpted body and scored and slipped into place, making sure of placement to achieve movement. After the clay was dry, three coats of slip was painted on the end of each coil, and the sculpture very, very carefully moved into the kiln and bisque fired. Then several coats of clear glaze was also painted over all, and the piece fired to 2243 degrees F for strength and durability.
But those are the "making" details, which understate the joy I have in the making, especially when I put on their faces and these sweet little creatures come alive for me! This fellow measures 8" L x 6" W x 4.5" H and is fun to put on the coffee table, mantle, or centerpiece of the dining table.....anywhere where it's whimsy brings you a smile. It is felted on the bottom to protect wood surfaces. I ship USPS parcel post by carefully bubble wrapping in strong double boxes.
When I first started making them, I didn't realize we had none here in the United States. They are from England, and come alive in children's imaginations at a young age from the Beatrice Potter "Mrs Tiggy Winkle" book. This sculpture is for the child in all of us!
