"Hoe a mau," paddle together, is an important concept in Hawaii. Each has a contribution that contributes to the greater good. This piece explores the action of lava as it spills down the mountain into the sea, effectively creating new land. As I was working on this piece, the kiln carving of the surging lava made me think of heaving sobs from a child who is coming to terms with a new reality- growing. The parent can only offer the space for this new growth.
This piece makes a unique table sculpture that transmits and reflects the ambient light in the room. Each viewing angle offers a new vista.
