I built this small hope chest out of poplar which my father in law had milled from a poplar tree which fell on his land several years ago. Lots of people have the inclination to paint poplar because of the mineral streaking which naturally occurs in it, but I love the green, purple, and ebony variations.
This chest was constructed with dado and rabbet cuts at each juncture to minimize the use of nails and to provide superior strength. Other details include beveled edges in the classical style and small inlays of ebony poplar on either side of each corner.
