Iron Strapped Fireplace Mantel

This mantel beam came from an old log settlers cabin in SW Wisconsin dating back to the late 1800s. It was the rafter plate and had a couple of notches where the rafters fit into place. We thought that a bit of blacksmith work was the best way to work around this old character.

The top and bottom of this mantel show original ax marks from settlers in the 1800s. Imagine that! This is a piece of history from when transportation was only horse and wagon.

The blacksmith work was done at WLB Blacksmith Shop in LeSueur, Minnesota. Wyatt always does nice, hand-hammered original work. This mantel was one that we have him carte blanche. Lot of nice features on this one -- handmade rivets, a square washer, and a split band on the bottom.

6in tall x 9in deep x 70.5 in long. We can cut the mantel down in length for no additional cost.

This particular example mantel prices out at $690 for the wood portion and $550 for the metalwork. Our mantels run $115/LF for the hand-hewn mantel and $100/LF for a circle sawn mantel. Ironwork ranges from $225 for simple metal straps to something like this in the $550 range. By not splitting that strap near the bottom back, the metal work cost goes down to $330 for the pair of straps.

Most average size mantels will ship for $75 via FedEx Gnd. Some larger mantels need to go Truck Freight or get charged extra by FedEx.
