THIS TALL STATELY cabinet is a study in balance, symmetry and proportion inspired by the furniture designs of George W. Maher, a noted American architect of the Prairie School. Maher was widely admired for houses that were remarkable for their open and flowing spaces graced with furniture fashioned from basic geometric shapes. A contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, Maher is considered by many architectural historians to have had as much, if not more, influence on 20the century American design as his more famous confederate.

The cupboard is an example of simple geometric shapes assembled into a harmonious whole. Its graceful lines feature sturdy reverse-tapered legs that give it a look of solid stability. The two silverware drawers are installed on full-extension, steel glides, out of sight underneath the drawers, for smooth, trouble-free operation for many years. Four adjustable shelves concealed by wide-stile Craftsman panel doors provide scads of dishware and serving-ware storage The wood used is carefully selected from the finest available hardwoods.

A chimney cupboard is ideal storage for Arts & Crafts period dining rooms which often featured rows of large windows for abundant light and fresh air. But, all those windows left the room with very little open wall space for large breakfronts and buffets. The chimney cupboard solves the problem with a beautiful, elegant cabinet that will tuck neatly into just about any corner of the room.

A part of an ensemble consisting of a coordinating dining table, sideboard and floor cupboard all designed using the motif-rhythm process pioneered by Maher, it provides elegant and generous storage in any Arts & Crafts era dining room.

The cupboard is available in five standard wood species, red and white oak, mahogany, black walnut and American cherry. The table top can be hard maple for durability, with another, more dec­o­ra­tive, wood making up the rest of the table. We can also make it without a top so you can add your own countertop to match the rest of your kitchen. We will send along plans for your counter-top fabricator.

CUSTOMIZATION: And, as is usual with our completely hand made furniture, you can customize it to fit your exact requirements with any size and combination of drawers and shelves that will fit into the case.

CRAFTSMANSHIP: Crafted with precession joinery typical of fine Arts and Crafts Period furnishings, it also includes the latest drawer tech­nol­o­gy. Our full extension under-mount glides are virtually invisible and make drawer operation smooth, safe and trouble-free. A self-close mechanism softly shuts the drawer for you and makes sure it stays closed. Each pair of slides is rated to hold 100 lbs.

The decorative hardware is authentic hammered bronze or wrought iron for absolute authenticity. Available in five standard wood species and over 60 standard finishes. If none of these suit you, then pick a wood and we'll see if we can get it.

Finished in our seventeen-step hand-applied finish using durable and nearly indestructible polyurethane, this is a piece designed and built to last many lifetimes with minimal care. We also offer custom finishes including hand-polished lacquer.
