Mahogany Dresser
11-drawer dresser, overall 40" high, 15 3/4" deep, 37" wide. Carcase in genuine Mahogany with chamfered trim details on base and crown. Drawers in Baltic birch plywood with box jointed corners, weathered bronze shell pulls, and soft-close drawer slides.
This project had a number of challenging elements that were fun to figure out. The overall width could not exceed 37", but the interior drawer space also had to accommodate maximum dimensions: therefore the drawer slides had to be undermounted, the drawer walls had to be at a structural minimum, and the side tolerances had to be exact.
Mahogany shines best when the pores are filled, so the finishing process was pretty extensive- but the result turned out quite well. Finished with multiple coats of Qualalacq lacquer, which is beautiful as well as highly resilient to water, alcohols, moderate heat, and abrasions- it's designed to take punishment that generations of use will throw at it.
