Architect Mary-Lou Arscott built a version of this shelving system years ago and recently updated the design for the condo of a discerning friend. Thin blades of wood spin out from the living room wall and lean into the kitchen nook. A massive bottom blade serves as a bar-like countertop for both rooms and shelters an angular steel storage box. Vertical steel plates read as dark lines, into which the shelves slot seamlessly. We took the design and helped tailor it to the space, then made all the components super-slick. Omnifab in New Kensington fabricated and powdercoated the steel pieces, we built the wooden components from select reclaimed barn oak finished in hardwax oil, and updated some of the architectural detailing bridging the rooms.
