Minimal, Blackened-Steel Bookshelves With Rolling Library Ladder

These floor-to-ceiling steel bookshelves complement the clean, modern aesthetic of this apartment in Boston's North End. The shelf spacing is calibrated to the space: shelf heights gradually become shorter as they approach the ceiling to align with the bedroom doorways while allowing the precise clearance needed for the library ladder. The shelves appear impossibly thin, but use subtle attachments to the backing wall to ensure strength and stability.

The rolling library ladder is a playful, and functional addition. A precision-designed v-groove bearing wheel and track system provides secure and smooth rolling action.

The product was fabricated off-site before being installed and calibrated in the apartment. The welded steel was blackened and sealed to provide an aged, durable finish.
