My Thoughts:

The large overhang on the Top together with the big arch on the lower stretcher give the piece a very nice contrast and proportion. Add in the trim that runs vertically on the two sides and center partition and the whole thing just works. The leaded glass inserts at the top of both doors just say Arts and Crafts/Mission furniture. My Etsy shop is my store…and I know if you like it on Etsy you would love it in person…and am certain you would own it. 5 step finish process

A little about me:

I have made arts and crafts, mission style furniture for going on 25 years. I specialized in reproducing early stickley, ellis, limbert and other designers hard to come by antiques. It is the only style that I have built and the only style that I will continue to build….to this day love each and every piece I build. I am a one man shop…..i hand pick the lumber, lay out the table tops, panels, etc. Make all the joinery, assembly, sand and finish every piece I sell. I could go on and on about this furniture. I will say this there is only one way to do this and that is the" right way"…..handcrafting some of the finest heirloom quality reproduction arts and crafts mission style furniture around.

The 5 step finish process:

Prior to stain and finish each piece is hand sanded with the grain. THe edges are broken by hand not rounded. The broken edge is synonymous with the period. It is this step which allows me to add character by breaking the edge a little more here and there.
Using a combination of dye stains formulated to replicate the look of fuming the first color coat is added. This step deeply penetrates the wood adding a very deep color. Completely different than using a pigment based stain which just sets on top of the wood.
Once initial color coat is dry a second coat is added with a slightly adjusted color and also applied in a different fashion than the first coat. This helps to blend and also adds great depth and dimension to the finished piece
Once both color coats are dry the pieces is finished with a coat of shellac….which this is done twice. All table tops then get an additional urethane and oil mixture rubbed on them. This provides the top and added amount of durability that the shellac alone does not provide.
Finally each piece is then rubbed out by hand with a combination of waxes and oils to finish off the final patina.

It was once said to me that I can find a 100 guys to build the piece but only a handful can finish it. I have come to value the final phase as this is where the true value of a handcrafted piece of furniture comes from. The end result is a brand new antique…..i do not distress the pieces but achieve that look through my finish process. This process provides and long lasting color which has great depth and dimension……which is what I consider a key element in being able to call my furniture heirloom.
