This music box was a joy to build. I learned some new techniques and work through the tough ones. This was brought to my attention from a gentleman who wanted a surprise for his future bride to be and I was honored. The story behind the scene of the box build that he shared with me actually brought tears to my eye's as I was telling my wife. I could really tell that this man loved this woman, and I wanted to create a special music box to go with this remarkable story.
The box was made from curly maple and maple splines. Once I constructed the box I added the bookmatched top. This is where the new technique came into play. I used a black and antique cherry dye to bring out the figure in the maple and did it!! This was beautiful it was sprayed in all with 12 coats of gloss and then buffed to a superb finish.
Inside the box was a custom designed music module that played a favorite song of hers. The great thing about this module is that when you open the box the light hits a sensor and the music starts. Closing the box it stops but starts back at the beginning again when the lid is opened again. Great design on the company who made this. On top of the lid was a custom engraving supplied by the customer. This was done through my local laser engraver and he also did a wonderful job.
