Natural Burl Wood Charcuterie Or Serving Board

Burl wood is actually not a species of wood, but it is a growth that happens in the wood which causes all sorts of amazing character to form. Burl cannot be created other than in nature and therefore it is highly desired. Think of the old school wood interiors of cars, which are now sometimes replicated in high end vehicles, but not are made in plastic to look like burl wood.

I have made many burl wood charcuterie and serving boards for those with distinguished taste. Burl wood is not for everyone, as the price for the wood alone adds a decent amount to the price, and not everyone can handle the crazy grain and variances in the wood. However, like If you see the wood characters in burl and love them, then this might be the wood for you.

In the Midwest in the heart of the US, where I live, we have more burl elm than other species, but we can get all sorts of species that will have burl, such as maple, oak, walnut and many others. Other burls exist across the US and the world. There are a few that I can't get a hold of import or export bans, but I can get a hold of any legitimate burls requested.

Each board that I make is different as I am responding to the materials.

Personally I appreciate the beauty of the natural wood. Natural knots, slight cracks and imperfections are rustic qualities. However, leaving the slight cracks creates the possibility for further splitting over time. Some prefer a more finished look. Just let me know how rustic/refined you are looking for and we can find a balance.

You could use these as cutting boards, but I would recommend that they be used as an aesthetically but functional unique serving board. All boards are finished with a food safe mineral oil. Click "Contact Maker" and let me know what you would like. I'll do my best to meet your needs. I can also make these boards in other woods as well, but I am showing all burl woods here. The live edge option is easier to accommodate in some species of wood than others. Burl wood is one with sometimes crazy edges.

How to order:

Let me know what you would like by clicking on the "Contact Maker" button and describing your idea the best you can. We can collaborate on your next serving board together! Pricing starts around $200+, and will depend on your needs, the species of wood, burl and figure of the wood, details such as carved spice indentions, personalized images or text, butterflies (or bow ties), size, live edge, branding, how much finish is required etc.

My normal time frame to make these is around 6 weeks +/-. If you need something quickly and just need me to send you a board I may have in the studio, let me know what you desire below and that you need it quickly and If available I will choose something nice, snap a pic and once you approve, send it out to you!

I look forward to working with you!

When I received this board I was sceptical that I would not be fully satisfied for as an art collector for 40 years I have become very demanding. Well to my incredulous view of this final product was without any doubt absolutely stunning. Darin White is an accomplished artist let alone a true professional who follows his client from beginning to final shipment. I truly hope that craftsmen of this caliber stay in business for a long time. Thanks again Darin and best of luck.
