The clients, a young & growing family, engaged us to create usable space for hanging out, dining, playing, and hobbies in their tiny Cambridge back yard. They wanted a relaxed, low-maintenance space that maximized reclaimed and natural materials. We terraced and regraded the area to create distinct rooms for each purpose, connecting them with a series of natural bluestone slab steps. Boulders and custom stone benches create integrated space for sitting and climbing. An outdoor shower with round riverstone pebbles gives the family a place to spray off before heading inside. Bamboo hedges provide privacy from nearby neighbors. We carefully preserved existing vegetation, like a mature Japanese maple, to give the impression of being inside a treehouse when looking from the large back windows of the dining room and master bedroom.
Phase II of the project, in spring, 2013, will include a custom sandbox/water play area and storage for firewood, surf boards, and toys.
