New Contemporary Art Glass Laminated Window

New Contemporary Stained Glass Window artwork and fabrication by Robert P. Horan of Chadds Ford, PA.

This window is made using a new stained glass technique which is a 2-part platinum silicone which is used to laminate the pieces of glass on a piece of sub straight safety glass.  This means that there is no lead came, or copper foil used to join the glass together.

This technique allows Robert to layer the glass to obtain a three dimensional look and amazing depth.  When layering different colors on top of one another they create new shades of color.  On this piece he used all Lambert's mouth blown flashed glass.  Without having traditional lead lines the edges of the glass are exposed which allows light to transmit through the edges.  That is why he used flash glass as it is clear on edge with color on the surface.  This creates a faceted jewel type of effect.

This particular piece of work has 3 layers of glass laminated together on the piece of sub straight safety glass.  There are over 2,000 pieces of hand cut glass.  Although the window is laminated to sub straight safety glass there are sharp edges exposed.  It is not recommended to touch or place window where the edges could cut someone. A piece of safety glass can be placed in front of the art glass if necessary.

The window is 27 1/2" diameter circle placed on a piece of sub straight safety glass which measures 27 3/4 x 28 3/4.  The window in the frame measures 30 7/8 x 32 1/8.  The weight of the piece in the existing frame is 40.6lbs.

This window could be installed in between rooms, in an outer wall or hung in front of an existing window.  Robert can also make you a window to your specifications.  Using this new process allows you to put stained glass in a skylight without worry of heat build up effecting the lead and bowing.
