Portfolio Box In Figured Soft Maple And Purpleheart
A local artist contacted me about building a custom portfolio box. H desired to have an eye catching means a safely transporting his 11"x14" prints of his art work. We chose premium figured soft maple for its magnificent beauty and purpleheart as it symbolizes royalty.
He wanted self closing soft close drawer slides and a skeleton key lock. I designed the box from the inside out. Meaning that I started with the size of the contents of the drawer 11'x14". The inside of the drawer is 11-1/2"x14-1/2". From there I consulted the space requirements of the slides.
I used hybrid (part power tool, part hand cut) dovetails and then rounded them over.
The finish is 10x coats of semi-gloss lacquer that has been rubbed out to a high gloss.
My client was utterly blown away at how amazing this box looked in person.
