Quilled Folk Art Designs

These beautiful quilled folk art designs are my newest creations. These pieces will be one of a kind, in that I will use the cut design again, but they will always be different colors. That is what makes them so much fun to make.

You can choose the design, and perhaps tell me the colors you would like to see, and I will then do it my way with your color choices. I will email you a photo of the quilled piece and you can then decide if you wish to buy it. If you want me to create a different one, that is fine. Just give me some more ideas and we will continue to work together until the perfect piece is created. I will work with you until you love it.

These pieces are framed in a 15 x 15 black wood frame. And I can even do a satin gold frame, if you wish. And I can always email a photo with frame choices, so you can decide which you like best.

So how did I get to this work? I having been looking at my wildlife pieces and thinking how they are muted, with little or no color, and I was becoming uninterested in producing the same pieces over and over again. I have also been having requests for horses and cats, designs that require precision work with the face. At the same time, I have been looking at how colorful the folk art work is. And suddenly I saw that I too could have color in my work -- and wouldn't it be fun to make a cat, or a dog....but the rooster struck me first. Funny really, because I grew up in a house full of roosters, because my Mom collected them, all the painted ceramic ones, and the black cutout rooster on the kitchen wall. I swore I would never want to do roosters. But here I am, and the Rooster has taken off, with five orders already during my summer of 2013 fair season. So here I am...folk art here I come.

What is Quilling?

Quilling is a very old craft. Its name comes of the old practice of trimming the gold edges from books, and then winding the narrow strips of paper around feather quills, using the quill for the tool. Once rolled into circles and pinched into various shapes, the paper is used as texture and detail in pictures.

My own technique uses the quill work as a background and details to cut-outs.

If you have a favorite folk art topic that you don't see here, let me know and I can work with the idea and maybe that will be my newest design.

A little more information about my work -- I do everything from the beginning to the end of each and every piece...Just Me. I start with the design work, the cutting of the overlay with an exacto knife, the rolling of the quilling paper, by hand, the glueing, the cutting of the mats, the cutting of the glass, the putting-it-all-together in the frame under glass, the photographing and all the website work.........if you have any questions, please email me.
