Ravens are central to the mythologies of many cultures. They hold various symbolic associations, from the harbinger of death to the creator of the world. Here in central Alaska ravens are everywhere. They have an amazingly complex social nature and produce the most intricate vocalizations of any songbird.
This raven and moon pendant/clasp is hollow, fabricated out of sterling silver sheet, making it surprisingly light. It can be worn in front or in back. I pierced (sawed) the raven and moon into a top sheet, and soldered it to a backing. I chased the crater texture into the moon; chasing is a technique where small punches are used to move and texture metal. I then formed the remaining walls, soldering them as I went. I filed and sanded off all the edges to make a smooth hollow, light-weight, form. At this point I turned it into a clasp by cutting a long notch along 2/3 of the side wall and making a large key-hole at one end (see alternate images). It is easy to use and very secure.
The necklace pictured is 16" long, and I am happy to lengthen it, at a cost of $35 an inch.
