Razor Blade Art And Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table
WOW...it's made of razor blades!!!
This is a typical reaction of patrons after having spent several minutes staring at my work and being informed that it is made out of Razor Blades!
This dramatic coffee table will be the star of the room. With it's striking red, white & blue americana theme, it is sure to make a patriotic statement in your home or office. This particular table is 42" long by 37.75" wide and it stands 17" tall. It is constructed of reclaimed barnwood from Pennsylvania. The table top is made by joining reclaimed red, white, and blue painted wood. The antique wood retains all of it's original patina including natural distressing, nail holes, and chippy paint. It has been sealed with 3 coats of Polycrylic sealer to ensure durability and no paint flaking. The edges of the tabletop have been sealed with wax and have a warm medium-brown hue. The collar (or skirt) of the table is made from antique reclaimed greyish-brown barnwood. The legs are made from 3/16" reclaimed steel angle iron with a rust patina that has been sealed with acrylic spray. Each leg has a design of 6 hand-drilled holes. The legs are secured with liquid nails and 2 carriage bolts (with 2 additional carriage bolts as decoration). This coffee table will last a lifetime with very little maintenance.
The tabletop insert is a one-of-a-kind, hand signed piece of artwork from me (artist Ed Bennett). My unique medium of razor blades is the central focal point. Carefully oxidized and hand painted razor blades combine to form an abstract, metallic center piece. The artwork features 24 American flags hand painted onto single razor blades. The center flag is made up of "backers" from razor blades to form the stripes and 6 additional blades to form the blue star field. The overall background is a field of blades (with stars hand sprayed onto them) laid out in a uniform checkerboard pattern. A 3/16" piece of tempered hardboard (masonite) was used as the base for the artwork and has 4 coats of gesso applied. All razor blades are PERMANENTLY sealed to the masonite with acryllic artist's materials. The artwork is additionally sealed under a 3/16" piece of glass with clear caulk around the edges to provide a waterproof seal.
