~ Reclaimed 1890s Oak Lath Artwork "Double Banded Monrovia" ~
Rustic Comfort. Modern Color Palette.
"Double Banded Monrovia"… is one of those rare pieces that seems to speaks to just about everyone – regardless of their age, income, political party or taste in style. From college students to young professionals and families to empty nesters updating their living spaces to those downsizing and moving into retirement homes…"Double Banded Monrovia" remains our most popular piece to date.
And for good reason. The 1890s Oak Lath.
You see it all the time on home improvements shows - that skinny, brown, dirty looking horizontal wood that shows up just as someone takes a sledge hammer to the plaster walls and slices through this amazing wood made from old growth oak trees that no longer exist today. Once the wood is cleaned and you see the amazing artwork that can be created with this old workhorse - you'll never be able to watch those shows again without grimacing. I can't anyway.
The wood's natural rich color and its uneven textured surface is permanently scarred with the circular criss crossed saw marks from when they were milled - which in my opinion, along with the nail holes, just adds to its overall beauty. Plus, the Oak Lath takes paint and absorbs stain like no other wood I've ever encountered. Lath especially seems to take its time absorbing the pigments into its grain, like it wants to pause and ponder just how much color it is willing to accept... nothing more… nothing less.
I begin the process imagining one color and the lath will almost always outperform my expectations.
The resulting colors are always a treat to see – often duskier and subtler but with the right shades – like the blues and turquoises, greens, yellows and white used in this piece - also brighter and more intense.
Rough Sawn Oak Lath Frame: finished in an environmentally friendly water based stain: "Summer Oak" - a rich, warm but light to medium brown.
All new nail holes will be filled and hand sanded. Frame Style: The reclaimed oak lath frame shown in photos features a squared corner frame. Mitered corners are not available with Lath.
All surfaces are finished and sealed with at least two coats of quality clear matte poly and a third coat of a satin poly finish... with hand sanding between coats for a feel and luster that resembles wax and is neither too dull or too shiny.
The back is neatly finished with brown paper and is signed by artists, titled and dated.
All Artwork arrives Ready to Hang with Two (2) Large Metal D Ring Hangers.
Recommended method of cleaning/dusting: Gently use a soft bristled brush or vacuum with brush attachment.
Note: The Fifth Frame Photo features a much larger Custom version that we created for a client and is not representative of the Double-Banded Monrovia available at this price point.
The only size we are currently offering: 25.5" x 25.5" - due to length limitations of our Lath inventory.
Images in photo may not be to scale and is shown for design purposes only.
NOTE: Our Reclaimed Wood Artwork is One-of-a-Kind. While each piece will be carefully handmade using the same varieties of reclaimed woods… finished in the same or similar stain and paint colors and techniques...it is virtually impossible to replicate two different pieces of this artwork to look exactly alike.
The reclaimed wood found in our artwork may contain some or all of the following: the original surface saw cuts, wood knots and holes, uneven thicknesses, notches, scraps, crevices, rust stains, nail holes, discolorations and other imperfections or blemishes. Each will be examined on an individual basis by the Seller for its integrity and solidness – and/or may be filled with wood filler, hand sanded to remove splinters or rough patches or left alone to create textural interest.
These characteristics are what make each piece of artwork unique and should not be considered a defect.
However, if one of these features is a concern - please speak to the Seller prior to ordering or at the beginning of the project to avoid delays.
