One of our clients has brought these cabinets along when their family moved to Vancouver from South Africa.
These pieces are made from solid Wenge wood (millettia laurentii). This wood started getting extremely popular in the contemporary furniture scene about 10 years ago — to a point where it was replicating the look by staining Oak and others species. Though this was a price-efficient and probably more sustainable way to provide to the trend, it had some people beginning to mistake 'Wenge' to be a color, not a wood. This species is reported as endangered by IUCN and certified supply can be challenging to find. When processing it one should take appropriate precaution since its coarse fibers are aggressive enough to perform microscopical surgery once entering your respiratory system.
We carefully disassembled the units into individual parts and began re-processing these to create new office shelving for the clients home.
