Redwood Slab With Natural Vine Design And Slate Shelf

This Redwood slab was cut from a longer piece with intriguing live edges on both sides. This end has a wonderful combination of smooth, symmetrical, tight grain and the natural unevenness of the natural edge. The simple, elegant Tricuspid vine motif was chosen because it added rather than distracted from the beauty of the wood. The dark slate shelf echoes the darkness of the engraving.

This Wall Altar / Wall Art piece is part of a series that I continue to work on and improve. They are inspired by my love for spirituality and nature. I love to work with both wood and stone, making it a joy to be able to combine them in this way.
Cut from local woods, this piece is made with a combination of hand tools and the latest CNC equipment. The shape is created by hand or with an automated router, depending on the design. All the engravings are setup and completed on a laser engraver.
Some pieces are left as engraved, but most are then painted to highlight and emphasize the engraved designs. This makes the designs really stand out. All the pieces are then selaed with several coats of clear lacquer.
The last step is to pair the individual pieces with just the right piece of stone. I search the local stone yards for interesting, colorful and unique stone varieties. The larger slabs are then chiseled and cut to their final shape and size, which is determined by the wood forms that they are to be paired with. This is an individual process that ensures that the qualities of the wood and stone are balanced and complemented. The final step is to assemble and deliver to the client.
