This client wanted a nice low profile rustic coffee table. He specified that it be a 36" by 36" square, have thick legs and a thick top, a lower shelf, and a rustic look and feel. I chose Knotty Alder for its beauty and strength.

This table will be stained and clear coated by the client. I left the saw marks as well as the planer marks to add to the rustic look and feel. I did some light sanding at 120 grit entirely by hand with a piece of sand paper.

For the edges I simply lightly sanded across to break the sharp edge. It may look from the pictures that the bottom shelf rests flat on the ground. It does not, I raised the lower rails and the shelf by 1/8" to allow for placement on imperfect flooring.

This piece will make a nice addition to you living room decor without breaking the bank.
