This playful podium design provides a welcome gesture to help temper anxiety for children and their families visiting the hospital, while functioning as a security staff workplace parked in the hospital lobby.
The base cabinet assembly is flush panel construction using three colors of plastic laminate and Corian solid surface material on a wood substrate. The steel plates of the feature frame were water jet cut to shape, then welded into a box-like assembly and painted red with a durable powder-coat. The "Dancing Man" figure inspired by the art work of Keith Haring was fabricated from 1/4-inch-thick stainless steel plate cut to shape and finished with a orbital sander. Flower bouquet was created with randomly bent steel rods, 5-inch metal discs, wood half-spheres, recycled metal springs and hand-painted artisan patterns (by Minneapolis artist Kathleen Nash).
