Shaker-Style Hancock Bench

These pine benches are based on measured museum pieces that would have been found in the Shaker community of Hancock, Mass around 1830.

I have made these in 3 and 4 foot lengths, but other lengths are also possible.

The curved support pieces are not only attractive, but are slotted into the legs, giving this lightweight bench plenty of strength.

The seat is held in place with a glue joint groove that the leg fits into across the width of the bench, but eight matching wood-plugged screws were used to hold everything together.

Other wood species could be used.
