Shaker-Style Meetinghouse Bench

These benches are based on benches the shakers would use at their gatherings around 1820.

Here, they have been shortened from around 7 feet in length to a more reasonable entryway or foot of the bed size of about 36" or 48".

They are very light but very sturdy. Made from quality local white pine, these benches feature braces with tight-fitting "half-dovetails." They are acually usable without glue and would have been nailed into place, but with modern glues, there is no need for any hardware.

When possible, I will make the seat and legs from one length of pine with an interesting tonal feature so it continues up one leg, along the seat, and then down the other leg.

Some have been stained and then shellacked, some I have used only clear shellac, and I recently stained and spar varnished a bench for semi-outdoor use on a porch.
