A beautiful music box that was in the top 30 in a national competition with over 300 entries. The leopardwood case is so dense that the acoustics are wonderful, filling an entire room with sound. A great gift for any special occasion.
This lid is hickory with purpleheart and maple trim. The flower is cut in double-bevel marquetry techniques using the woods of purpleheart, holly, yellow heart and wenge. The stems are curupixa and the leaves are blue-stained pine with curupixa veins. The box is leopardwood with purpleheart feet and keys. The inside lid is veneer marquetry. The bottom is alder with sapelle veneer and felt lining. The movement can be changed to most any tune that can be found on an 18 note Sankyo movement. The box is finished with satin polyurethane varnish.
Double-bevel marquetry uses the texture, figure, and color of a variety of woods to produce the flower image. It is a rare and specific type of marquetry that very few woodworkers use and requires extreme patience and skill. All woods are veneered in house and each panel is cut by hand with a fret saw.
