Appalachian Edge Grain Hardwood Cutting Boards

Sustainable, functional beauty.

As an environmental educator I enjoy connecting people with the wonders of our natural world. I have a tremendous amount of interest in the trees that shape our forests- from their ability to sustain our ecosystems to their uniqueness and beauty.

Stonefly Woodcrafts uses sustainably harvested and reclaimed hardwoods from here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. A wide variety of native hardwoods is available, chosen for their distinctive physical characteristics, color and grain pattern. Commonly selected species include sugar maple (Acer scaccharum), wild black cherry (Prunus serotina), black walnut (Juglans nigra), ash (Fraxinus sp.), black locust (robinia pseudoacacia) and white oak (Quercus alba).

Edge grain boards are available in custom sizes to fit your needs, with a maximum of 12 inches wide and 24 inches long. All are approximately 1 inch thick unless specified by the buyer (if a larger board is requested, a 1.5 inch thickness will be utilized). Cost is dependent upon size, and based upon $0.40 per square inch (for instance, a 10x12 inch board is priced at $48.00).

This board will serve you well for everyday use, and the exposed edge grain offers a highly attractive cutting and display surface. Woods featuring special features such as spalting, figure and flecking can be utilized if requested. Each has been treated with a beeswax, mineral oil mixture.
