These colorful handmade ceramic square plates are a great size for:

tapas
sushi
small appetizers -- little cream puffs, olives, egg rolls, pot stickers
bread rolls
place to hold jewelry or loose change
candles
small guest soaps
a tray for small pill bottles

I create these 1" high x 6" square trays out of white stoneware clay, then I add a design in the center that includes colorful flowers, bees, sometimes woodland creatures like deer, elk, bear, sometimes a cat or bird. Pottery stains and glazes for the color and sealed it all in with a translucent glaze. The rims feature a complementary color to the design.
