Side Light Windows - Honu Serenade

As part of a complete home remodel, the client wanted a pair of stained glass windows to flank her new sliding glass door in the master bedroom. She loves green Hawaiian sea turtles so that was a definite element in the design. Her husband is an avid deep sea diver and underwater photographer and is partial to Moorish idols and parrot fish so these sea creatures were also woven into the design. I wanted movement in the design so many of the creatures are clustered to give a sense of interaction and each of the sea turtles is in a different phase of swimming: coasting, stoking, ascending, descending, etc.
The client creates beautiful quilts and the color palette of silvery clear through the range of blues from pale to navy was inspired by one of her favorite quilts. The vertical flow of the water contrasts with the diagonal placement of the sea creatures.
The Moorish idols and parrot fish are fused glass elements. This allowed me greater flexibility with the coloring as I could use powders that I fired onto the base glass. There is also some line detail added to the parrot fish that give them a bit of personality as they swim by.
Each sidelight window is 72"x 22"
