"Sunburst" Multidimensional Layered Carving

This framed piece represents an abstract sun spreading its rays from corner to corner. The face of the sun can be playful or stern depending on the perspective of the viewer. The color scheme of the piece moves along the thatched rays from the focal point of the natural face. It moves through shades of orange near the face and settles into a deep red where the frame intersects the rays.
The piece is comprised of a 1/2" back layer of purebond Birch hardwood and several layers of 1/4" purebond Birch hardwood layered at varying heights providing texture and dimension throughout the piece.
There are over 200 individual pieces throughout this project coming together to create a unique design. The layers are spaced using a combination of aluminum and wood spacers.
Every individual piece of the project is hand sketched, hand cut with a jigsaw, hand finished with a five stage sanding technique, and hand rubbed with water-based dyes and several layers of water-based polyurethane to give a smooth organic feel to each component. The pieces are placed one at a time and secured using a combination of hidden screws and 2 part epoxy wood glue to make the project extremely sturdy.
The frame is backlit with a remote controlled RGB LED lighting system. With its remote, the user is able to change between any one of 16 colors, including white, and use set color changing patterns. The lighting comes prewired with an AC/DC adapter but should be professionally wired into a wall switch to hide exposed cords.
